Big Meeting

Hey Girlies,

Well, tomorrow is the {{B I G}}meeting with our entire district to discuss the changes in Michigan legislation as it pertains to teachers in this grand 'ol state.  I'm nervous...now that teacher tenure has changed I just don't know what to expect.  I find myself wondering what I'm so nervous about - I teach with all that I've got...I don't have much more that I can give...yet I feel like maybe I'm not giving enough to keep my job.

My biggest question is about teacher lay-off.  I'm not sure how it works in your neck of the woods - but in the past it's always been based on seniority {good or bad - I don't really know how I feel about that...other than I'm scared witless thinking that I could possibly be laid off - my district lays off at the end of every. single. school year.}.  I know there are a good many who work without tenure or unions so you're probably wondering what all the fuss is about.  There are a lot of rumors swirling and I think my imagination is getting the better of me.

So, this {{B I G}} meeting where a teacher-lawyer talks with the entire district under one roof to explain the changes and what we should expect starts bright and early tomorrow morning. I'm hoping I leave there with a sense of relief rather than despair.

I'm a glass half-full kinda gal...I tend to look at the world through rose-colored-Junie B. Jones, First Grader at Last-glasses....so I hope, hope, HOPE that all my worry is for nothing.

Keep your fingers crossed...

And if I do get laid off...anybody want to open a coffee shop with me? {Barb?!?}

  2. In our district we were informed that layoffs will now be based on our "effectiveness rating" so teachers who have been teaching 30+ years and are rated ineffective will be laid off before new teachers who are rated effective. It is defiantly scary especially when you know the administrators have friends that will never be rated ineffective no matter how they teach, it just doesn't seem fair. I know others don't have unions and it does work but in smaller districts it can get really personal. I am worried about the whole process too! I'm in on the Coffee Shop though - Let's do it!!

  5. Hi Holly! Thank you for the kind post on my new blog and for becoming a follower. I am following your blog now too!

    My district has gone through the lay-off process several times and this last year was so stressful and then at the beginning of this new school year they hired 4 brandnew teachers at my school. Amazing! I hope that all works out for you and your district.
