Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites ~ Chapters 1 & 2 ~ This Post Will Make You THINK!

I'm all geared up for this book study.  If you don't have a blog, but you'd like to participate in this awesome professional development opportunity, join in the linky by visiting the various blogs that are participating. Chime in with your thoughts via the comment section.  If you don't have the book you  will be able to share your thoughts just based on what the bloggers have shared - but you could also pick it up through iBooks if you have an iPad, iPhone, etc.  That's where I got mine.

I'm joining Kickin' It In Kindergarten today to talk about chapters 1 & 2

Just as soon as I heard about the book study I shared it with my staff.  While I love all types of professional development - because there are benefits to each and every type {whether it be in a lab classroom format, webinar, Instagram, in-school book studies, blogger book studies, etc.} this is one of my favorites.

Life around these parts can be hectic - basketball, baseball, house cleaning, etc. it can be hard to be held hard and fast to a specific time/place/event for professional development.  Read when I can? Sounds great.  Share my thoughts with THOUSANDS of others?  Oh yeah!  Mull over the thoughts shared by many?  Sign me up!  Professional development at its finest! {In my opinion}

With that, it's time to link up with Kickin' it in Kindergarten for chapters 1 & 2 in Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites by Marcia Tate.

You know you have found a book that is right up your alley enough for you to relate and enough for you to learn from when you start highlighting like a mad woman...

...and talking to yourself "Oh yeah!" "Amen!" "Sing it sister!"

Introduction

"...{we} are not only teachers but also gardeners, better known as dendrite growers because every time students learn something new in their classrooms, they grow a new brain cell, called a dendrite"

I just like that because it's such a hefty thing to think about.  Nothing bothers me more than feeling somebody in my class is there tuned out, and for lack of a better way to say it "rotting".  We are gardeners and we must cultivate those dendrites.  It can be daunting - but we have to remember the various ways students learn and how we can best reach them.  I have recently adopted the workshop/guided {fill in the blank} approach in most subjects.  It's just the only way I can see meeting individual needs in a way that targets their readiness and skill level the best.  Differentiation isn't just a catch phrase, it's not just a part of our teacher-jargon - it's what's right for students.

"When you examine the list of 20 {strategies}, you will find that they are used most frequently in the lower elementary grades. When the strategies begin to disappear from the repertoire of teachers is about the same time students' academic achievement, confidence, and love for school also diminish"

My colleagues and I have talked about this time and time again.  It seems that we work our behinds off trying to help all students reach their fullest potential and we do a darn good job!  Years pass and we hear mutterings of these same students struggling either in middle school or high school.  We just couldn't figure out what was happening.  Don't get me wrong - I'm not AT ALL disparaging middle school or high school teachers - my husband is one and a darn good one at that.  Things do change somewhere between first grade and 12th grade and I wish they didn't.  Sometimes I think we focus our "reform efforts" in the wrong places...not to toot our horns - but elementary teachers have such a strong understanding of human beings and their needs and I think your upper grade teachers have a very strong understanding of their content....it's just that some need to find a way to mesh the two.

Strategy 1:
Brainstorming and Discussion

"They can't talk in class. They can't talk in the hall. They can't talk in the cafeteria. They can't talk at all!"

This one hit me "right there".  I see people asking for ways to make their transitions quieter, I hear of schools that require students to sit and eat without talking.  I'll never forget a quote a professor shared with my class when I was in college.  I wish I could find the person who first said it.  If you know, please let me know!

I know it's important to have control of your class and to manage behaviors but there is a way to do this and allow your students to be human beings.  Can you sit in a workshop for 6 hours without chit chatting with your teacher-neighbor?  I know I sure can't!  So why expect that of your students?  I swear, it's during these conversations, that our students learn most!  Next time your class transitions, pay close attention to what they are talking about - I can guarantee that in some way, what they are talking about, is helping them grow...whether it be socially, behaviorally or academically - they are growing!

Some strategies the book mentions to allow for constructive conversations:

*Ask questions based on Bloom's Taxonomy

"Stick Pick" - I've mentioned this app before - it's great for picking students to answer questions - and has the Bloom's question stems built right in!

*Think, pair, share {and oldie but a goody} - I do this in my classroom, but not often enough that my students feel comfortable with one another to take risks.  I create "learning partners" for each trimester where students sit by the same student every day for every group discussion {for every subject} - I just get so caught up in my own mini-lessons, I forget to have them TALK with one another {and keep my mouth SHUT}.  Must fix this!

My big takeaway?  Allow more time for students to talk and challenge one another's thinking.  Model this with your own questions during whole group conversations.

Strategy 2:
Drawing and Artwork

This chapter was EXTREMELY encouraging and validating for me.  I've had this conversation more than a few times, over the years, since moving toward a more "rigorous" and "data-driven" age of teaching - "How is artwork aligned with the common core?" It was hard for me to find words aside from "Seriously, you can't see how it's important?"  No, there isn't a CCSS that specifically addresses doing craftivities or the like; but you HAVE to trust your teacher instincts people!  You know what is good and right for your students.

But now you have this book, written by an amazingly respected educator, and can you really disagree with more than 70 years of research? {Allen, 2008; Dewey, 1934} "Researchers have written about the positive relationship between thinking in art and thinking across the curriculum." Adding to that affirmation, "When children play - draw, dance and sing - they engage every sense and help wire the neurons for learning successfully." {Sousa, 2006}

So, when somebody skeptically gives you the hairy eyeball while secretly admiring looking at the artwork you have hanging in the hallway or your classroom remember Marcia Tate and her collection of research that supports why you do what you do.

I try to repeat this mantra in my mind  - because even I, after enough hairy eyeballs, lose sight of the fact that I'm giving my students something that will serve them well in the real world.

"As long as I can support why I do what I do, and what I do is purposeful, I'll do it - even if I may encounter some friction" {Crisscross Applesauce in First Grade, 2015}

I would absolutely LOVE for you to comment below, with your thoughts and ideas - we can learn even more through thoughtful and reflective dialogue with one another!

How I Spent my Winter Break ~ Linky

Hey Everybody,

I hope you had the best break EVER!  I know I did!  I tried to incorporate a lot of laziness to our days off.  I just feel like during the school weeks we are so busy that we don't stop to smell the roses enough.  Case in point...

We spent some time in Chicago over break.  My family was practically a block ahead of me {who could blame them in those frigid temps?!?} as I kept stopping to really look at and appreciate the sights.  After a while, I heard my youngest say " I want to slow down so I can notice things".

Other than our travels to mine and my husband's childhood homes, and our Chicago trip - we spent a lot of time just chilling and loving the calm.

Then, it happened - I woke up in the middle of the night and sort of felt my heart pitter patter and I couldn't fall back to sleep.  I realized, at that moment, that I had to do some teaching on Monday and that I didn't really remember what I had planned for it two weeks ago.

So, I went downstairs, fired up the computer and looked...just so that I could fall back to sleep.

I thought that would calm my overactive brain - but it didn't, so I might have watched a couple episodes of my newest Netflix addiction...

It was if you give a Moose a Muffin...

Then, I couldn't sleep because every time I closed my eyes, I pictured super freaky ghosty-demon things...oy...

So, I decided to watch some Shaytards...

I was introduced to this wonderful family of vloggers by Ms. T. {AKA - Journey of  a Substitute Teacher} If you ever need to readjust your outlook on life - this family will help you do that!

And....

The highlight of our break?

We no longer have a vanity and a toilet in our living room!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!

Goodbye 80's bathroom...

All in all, I'd say our break was filled with a little bit of 'dis and a little bit of 'dat.  Which was perfect!

As we head back to work - I posted this on my Facebook page as a reminder to myself and others...

Here's the blog post I was referring to..

I'll leave you with that!!!

Happy New Year!!!!

Meet the Teacher {Linky}

Hey Guys,

I'm linking up with my bloggy buddy, Stephanie over at Falling Into First , to share a little about myself!  My husband calls me Mrs. Kravitz for good reason - I'm super nosy, so something like this gets me all giddy...if you go check out the party, you can get a sneak peek into other bloggers'  lives.

I'm Holly, and I'm a Momma {Zach, 12 & Brandon, 9 1/2}, Wife {Patrick - who is also a teacher} Teacher {This is my 16th year in First Grade} Friend {I'm blessed with some good ones} and Michigan teacher-blogger.  I wear lots of other hats, but these are some pretty important ones to me.  We are a sports family...baseball, basketball, football, soccer...you name it, and I'm washing the clothes for it!!!!

We love to be silly and have fun!
We spend a lot of time together as a family!  My boys are best friends {Although they like to tell you how much they argue...}.  We still eat family dinners every single night and talk A LOT.  Although we are very busy, we make every effort to stay connected that way...even if it means we have to eat dinner at 4:00 in the afternoon {My friends call us "geriatric"...I resemble that remark! HA!}.  We love exploring our wonderful state of Michigan and go up north every summer.  Mostly, we are homebodies....we could spend the day together doing a whole bunch of nothing and end the day with a smile on our faces!!!!

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...

Public radio, my Fitbit, talking on the phone, Flair pens, cute planners, Target, Donut Shop Coffee, Netflix, Instagram, blog stalking!

IF YOU WEREN'T A TEACHER, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO BE?

Aside from always wanting to be a stay at home mom...honestly, there was nothing else I wanted to be...I've wanted to be a teacher since first grade and have never wanted to be anything else. Okay, I take that back, I'd love to invent something cool...

THREE LITTLE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU.

Empathetic. Loyal. Funny.

FINISH THE SENTENCE, "________,  SAID NO TEACHER EVER!!"

I am ALL caught up...

Deck the Halls with TpT ~ Linky Party

I love to shop!  How about you?  I'm not much of a "go to the store" kinda shopper.  More like an online shopper.  I don't like lines.  I don't like squeezing through packed aisles.  Truth be told, I just really like my couch, my comfies and my dog nestled just so with me in "my spot".  Just call me Sheldon. {Big Bang Theory reference}

So, if you're like me, and you're in the shopping spirit {Am I the only one that ends up buying myself stuff when I should be shopping for others?!?!} the Cyber Monday {and Tuesday} sale at TpT will hit the spot!

I'm linking up with Christina over at Bunting, Books and Bainbridge along with lots of other blogger friends to give you that one stop shopping experience.  Click away at the linky party to find something for everyone! Now that's MUSIC to my ears!!!!

So, let's see what's playing...

What's rockin' at my store right now!

We're also jammin' to...

And you can't forget this oldie but goody...

Here's a closer look at my newest product...we're smack dab in the middle of our how-to writing unit and this makes it soooooo much easier to teach and for my kiddos to learn this sometimes tricky genre of writing!!!

Click the picture to find it at my store!
Have fun shopping...I know I will! I had to take the day off tomorrow because my boys don't have school.  Oh the horror, right?  HA!  I'll be working on report cards and of course SHOPPING!

Toodles!

Hall Pass

Anybody need a hall pass?  Reagan's gonna hook you right up!  Sometimes I feel like a good walk down the hall, toward the Diet Coke machine, would do this girl some good...

Or, I'll send my firsties off to lunch/recess - close my classroom door, turn off the lights and blog stalk.  Ahhhhhh....

Today, I'm home - on my couch - the ULTIMATE HALL PASS!  Blog stalking, creating, and catching up on The Bachelor. {And mulling over in my head how on earth my second grader is going to create a 3D mallard duck}

Here's how the Hall Pass works...

Product...

Hmmm...which product of mine do I like the most?  Gosh, that's a tough one. Since I'm not at school right now I looked through my classroom pictures on my computer.  I'm a background "looker" and kept seeing items from this pack...

So, for today, this will be my favorite!

Give Me Five posters are referred to frequently!
See the table sign? Several color choices!

Area...

I would have to say my favorite "nook" in my classroom is where we store lots of our Daily 5 activities, our little couch {road-side find} and our Writer's Workshop materials.  It's so cozy and my kiddos this year can HANDLE it  {nobody hides out there} - another major plus!

Isn't it cute?  By the way, if you're a look around at the whole picture kinda person...the table number situation was fixed...I made it two-sided! HA!

Signal...

I use so many different signals in my classroom.  Gotta keep it varied, right?  My go-to when I need them to stop what they are doing and listen for some quick directions is "Give Me Five" {Posters pictured above and can be found here} but I also say "Eyes, Ears and Lips" {eyes are looking, ears are listening and lips are zipped...same basic concept as Give Me Five}.  I say Eyes, Ears and Lips when they are sitting on the carpet and have started some side-chatting during my teaching {I'm sure that never happens to you}.  If I want them to clean up I have special songs I use for different subjects...I use this CD a ton..

There's a great one called "Read a Book" that we use for Daily 5 and the others are songs with great lessons.  The kids love 'em!  "Itchy, Itchy, Owie, Owie, Boo, Boo" is another crowd favorite.

Sanity...

We have something in our school called the "Perk Cart".  Some cuties in our school push the Perk Cart through the halls of our school in the morning.  They stop by and ask if we would like to purchase something from their cart.  It gives them great practice interacting with others - practicing their manners and collecting/counting money.  Anyhoo...I'd like to say it gives me practice with exerting self control, but I'd be lying.  Lots of goodies on that cart from York Peppermint Patties, to carrots {I'll let you guess what I buy}.

Nothing gives a girl a boost like an hour lunch/recess to get herself ready for the afternoon, a few of these...

And a little blog-stalking!

Linking up With Love *Valentine's Day Freebie*

It is crazy hard to believe that February is right around the corner..I mean, that Groundhog is going to be peaking out to let us know just how many more weeks of winter we will have.  That always makes me think spring is right around the corner, which makes me think of the end of the school year - yikes...put on the brakes!  I love this group wayyyyyy too much to say good bye so soon.

Okay - it's really only February...the month of looooooove.

I'm linking up with Tessa over at Tales From Outside the Classoom to share some of those things that rank right up there in my life.

I have so many awesome people in my world....what a blessing to be surrounded by people who remember what you drink at Starbucks and who listen to your moans, groans and celebrations.  Whether it be my family or friends {both bloggy and "real life"} I'm one blessed chicky.  My sister-slash-photographer took this picture of {some} the cousins...

Ham 1 & Ham 2 are my boys! Those boys the loves of my life...they keep me on my toes, are so darn smart, and make me smile EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.   Poor Aunt Lisa did not have agreeable subjects that day - but can't you just see the love in that picture?!?

Right now I am completely in love with using my reusable cup from Starbucks!!!!!

It only cost a dollar and I get 10 cents off my Chai Tea Latte each time I fill'er up!!!!

I love teaching, blogging, creating and talking about teaching, blogging and creating!  HA!  If you are reading this and have ever wondered if you should start a blog or maybe start creating things for TpT I think you should give it a go!!!!  No stinkin' thinkin'.  I mean, c'mon...look at my first post...it was no great shakes, but on that day - with that first comment I fell in LOVE!!!!!! {With my profession all over again!}  I've made so many friends in blogland and while you might have 3, 4 or 5 people on your team...I have more than I can count!

I love fiddling around on the computer - but never, ever, never did I think I would take my ideas and share them with the world!!!!! {I've received emails from AUSTRALIA}  My latest creation that is chock full of LOVE is my Valentine's Day pack...

Click {here} to head over to TpT
I would love, love, love to give it away to three of you...comment below with something YOU love!!!  I'll randomly choose three people later tonight!

Thanks for sharing all of your LOVE!
The winners, chosen by my fifth grader, are...

Here's a freebie...because I know you LOVE those!!!!!

Happy weekend!!!
